6 years covering Pakistan's job market

If you have been waiting for a government job with real career stability, this one deserves your full attention. Islamabad Police has announced fresh vacancies in its Dolphin Unit across three ranks — Sub Inspector, Assistant Sub Inspector, and Constable. The application window is open right now, and the last date is closer than you think. Here is everything you need to know before you apply.

Job Overview

The Islamabad Police Dolphin Unit is an elite patrol force known for rapid response and high visibility policing across the capital. These are not desk jobs. If you want an active career in law enforcement with the prestige of a specialized unit, this is a genuine opportunity.

Three categories of posts have been announced. There are 2 seats for Sub Inspector (BPS-14), 38 seats for Assistant Sub Inspector or ASI (BPS-11), and a much larger pool of 750 seats for Constable (BPS-7). All postings are Islamabad-based, meaning your entire service career will be in the federal capital. Go in with that understanding before you apply.

The recruitment is being handled through the National Police Foundation Testing and Assessment Service. Applications are online only — no paper forms accepted.

Eligibility Criteria

Sub Inspector (SI)

Age limit: 18 to 30 years. A general age relaxation of five years is already included in that upper limit, so you do not need to apply for it separately.

Education requirement is at least a Bachelor’s degree — BA, BSc, or any equivalent qualification. If you hold a BS four-year degree, an LLB, DVM, or any other degree that is equal to or above Bachelor’s level, you qualify. The post is open to both males and females.

Physical standards matter a lot here. Male candidates need a minimum height of 5 feet 7 inches. Female candidates need 5 feet 2 inches. For males, chest measurement must be at least 33 inches at rest, expanding to a minimum of 34.5 inches when breathing in — that is a 1.5-inch expansion requirement. There is zero relaxation on height. If you are even one inch short, you will be disqualified at the physical stage.

There are 2 SI seats in total: one reserved for Islamabad domicile holders and one for Punjab domicile holders.

Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI)

The age and education requirements are identical to Sub Inspector. 18 to 30 years, minimum BA/BSc or equivalent. Physical standards are also the same.

Of the 38 seats, the breakdown is: 16 for Islamabad domicile, 8 for Punjab, 4 for Sindh, 2 for KPK, 1 for Balochistan, and 1 each for Ex-FATA and Northern Areas (GB). There is also 1 open merit seat where all candidates compete regardless of domicile, and the top scorer gets it.

Note for GB candidates: you are not eligible for the ASI category. There are separate Constable seats for you.

Constable

Age: 18 to 30 years (again, the five-year relaxation is already built in). Education required is Matric or equivalent — O-Level and A-Level both count. The physical standards remain the same for height and chest.

The 750 Constable seats are distributed as follows: 28 on open merit, 319 for Islamabad domicile, 160 for Punjab, 61 for Sindh (37 rural, 24 urban), 37 for KPK, 9 for Balochistan, 9 for Ex-FATA, 6 for AJK, and 3 for GB.

Salary and Benefits

The Sub Inspector post sits at BPS-14, which currently puts the basic pay somewhere in the range of Rs. 45,000 to 55,000 per month before allowances. With police-specific allowances — risk allowance, special pay, and utilities — the actual take-home is meaningfully higher. ASI at BPS-11 and Constable at BPS-7 follow the same structure, just at lower base rates.

Here is what a lot of people overlook when evaluating these jobs: government pension, free or subsidized medical coverage for you and your family, housing facilities depending on seniority, and long-term job security that the private sector simply cannot match in Pakistan right now. A Constable post at BPS-7 may not look impressive on paper, but it comes with a career ladder. Many officers who started as Constables have moved up through departmental promotions over time.

My honest take: for a fresh Matric or BA graduate with no connections and no capital to start a business, this is one of the more reliable career paths available. The Dolphin Unit specifically carries status within the police department, which can help with future postings and promotions.

How to Apply

The process is fully online. You have two options: apply directly through the official Islamabad Police website, or go to npftas.pk (National Police Foundation Testing and Assessment Service). Both lead to the same process.

You need to create a login account first, then fill out your application form carefully. Make sure every detail matches your CNIC, domicile certificate, and educational documents. Even small mismatches have caused disqualifications in similar recruitment drives.

Application fee is Rs. 2,000 per post. If you want to apply for all three ranks, you pay separately for each — that is Rs. 6,000 total. This fee is non-refundable regardless of whether you get selected. The fee is on the higher side compared to PPSC (which charges around Rs. 600), and it is a fair criticism. Budget for it in advance.

You can choose your test center when applying. You do not have to travel to Islamabad for the written test — centers are available in multiple cities across Pakistan.

Important Dates

Last date to apply: November 15, 2026.

That gives you roughly two weeks from when this announcement was made. Do not treat November 14th as your deadline. Servers get congested on final days, payments sometimes delay, and a technical glitch at 11:58 PM is nobody’s problem but yours. Apply in the first week if possible.

Keep a screenshot of your submitted application and your fee payment receipt. You will need both if any issue arises later.

Preparation Tips

Start your physical training now. The running test is one mile. Males must complete it in 7 minutes; females in 10 minutes. If you have not been running regularly, start today — not the week before the test. Build up gradually: run three times a week, increase your distance slowly, and time yourself honestly. A lot of candidates pass the written test only to fail at the physical stage because they did not take the running seriously.

Get your documents in order early. You will need your original CNIC, domicile certificate, matric or degree certificate, photographs (check the official size requirement), and your fee payment receipt. If any document is expired or lost, start the renewal process immediately.

For the written exam, expect general knowledge, current affairs, Pakistan Studies, Islamic Studies, English, and basic math. The syllabus is not officially announced yet, but this format is standard for police recruitment. Practice past PPSC and FPSC general knowledge papers — they cover similar ground. Ten to twenty marks may be allocated to an essay section, so practice writing short, clear essays on current topics.

Choose your domicile category wisely. If you hold an Islamabad domicile, compete in that category since the seat count there is higher. If you hold a Punjab domicile, the competition is stiffer relative to seats, so your preparation level needs to be sharper.

Do not ignore the chest expansion requirement if you are a male candidate. It sounds minor but many candidates with good height have been turned away because they could not demonstrate the required 1.5-inch chest expansion. Breathing exercises and basic upper-body fitness help here.

Why You Should Apply

Government jobs in Pakistan are genuinely hard to come by right now. PPSC and FPSC advertisements have been slow. The Islamabad Police opening fills that gap and comes with some real advantages: the Dolphin Unit is a high-profile posting, the job is secure, and the capital city location means access to better facilities and infrastructure compared to postings in smaller cities.

For younger candidates with a Matric qualification, the Constable position is an entry point into a career that can grow. The police department promotes from within, and a dedicated officer with good service records can move up over time. This is not a dead-end posting — treat it as a starting point.

If you already have a degree and are in your mid-to-late twenties, the ASI or SI posts are worth serious effort. The competition will be real, but 38 ASI seats across a national applicant pool is not an impossible target if you prepare well.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply for more than one post at the same time?

Yes. You can apply for all three — Sub Inspector, ASI, and Constable — simultaneously. Each requires a separate application and a separate Rs. 2,000 fee. The physical test process may be combined or run separately depending on how the department manages it.

I have a BS four-year degree. Am I eligible for SI or ASI?

Absolutely. A BS degree is equivalent to or above BA/BSc, so you qualify for both posts.

I live in Punjab but want to apply for an Islamabad-based job. Is that possible?

Yes. There are reserved seats for Punjab domicile holders in both the ASI and Constable categories. You apply under the Punjab quota.

What happens if I fail the physical test for SI but had also applied for Constable?

Based on how similar recruitment drives (like FIA) have been handled, you should be given a separate chance at the physical test for the lower-ranked post. The legal expectation is that since you paid separate fees for each application, you get separate opportunities. How Islamabad Police specifically manages this will become clearer once the testing phase begins.

Is there any TA/DA for candidates who travel for the test?

No travel allowance or daily allowance is being provided. Factor your travel costs into your planning.
